MTN strike disrupts service and Twitter reacts

MTN staff demanding bonus pay and salary increases took strike action to the MTN Group head office on Wednesday 20 May 2015. The Communication Workers Union (CWU) which organised the strike has about 2000 affiliated MTN staff. Employees want 10% salary increases and a 16% bonus.

MTN warned customers in advance about the potential service disruption.

The public responded on Twitter:

Besides halting services, traffic on 14th Avenue, Fairland, Randburg also felt the impact.

Some customers claim that poor service delivery is a “regular” occurrence.

MTN however communicated apologies via its Twitter account.

Some members of the public appeared to be supporting the workers.

Workers marched with placards stating their demands.

The CEO and MTN leadership arrived.

The CWU president Clyde Mervin handed over a memorandum to MTN leadership.
